Two new feature requests to support disaster recovery environments for Sybase ASE

In response to my earlier post, we need to have the ability for two things:

  1. Be able to load a database from backup if the database.status column is 320 (offline and suspect) – this will allow us to avoid dropping the database with “dbcc dbrepair(<dbname>, dropdb)” and recreate the databases for load.  Perhaps a “load database <dbname> from …. with override”?
  2. “create database …. for load” can take hours or days depending on the size and speed of the devices. In certain DR situations, we don’t have the time for the load database for load to be performed. We need a “create database …. for load with DDL only” which will populate the system tables and verifies that the specified databases are available. This should be a sub-second operation. By providing this method, Sybase can provide DR hosting sites a fully supported method to rebuild a database in a reasonable timeframe.

I’m waiting on the feature request numbers from Sybase.  As soon as I receive them, I’ll update this post.

  1. Dr.Tilt says:

Hi Froebe – did Sybase already reply to this? This would be a nice feature…

    Best Regards,
    Dr.Tilt

  2. Last I heard, it was “under consideration” by ASE engineering. I hope to raise the issue at TechWave this year if it isn’t addressed soon.
